Safe Travels

We are excited to welcome you to the secluded beauty of Villa Sumaya. Since 2000, we have transported our guests safely from the airport to our hotel. Here in Santa Cruz, the local expats feel safe and we often walk around at night and leave our doors unlocked. To make sure your entire journey is comfortable and safe, we prefer to pick up our guests from the airport or their hotel in dependable private transport. Reading this kit helps ensure your safe and smooth arrival to our center. Once you arrive, please ask for a tour. For your convenience, we have a lockbox in each room for your valuables.

Arrival & Departure

Check-in Time: 3:00pm – 8:30pm

Check-out Time: 11:00am

If you are a hotel guest, please contact us with any questions at If you are coming with a group, contact your group leader with questions. Important Phone Numbers (dial 502 for Guatemala): Villa Sumaya 4026.1390 or 4026.1455 Kan Servicios (shuttle service): 5354.3894

Arriving at the Airport

When you arrive at Aurora Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City, you will go through Immigration, retrieve your bags and exit after customs. Inside the airport, there are men to help get your bags off the carousel. You can tip them in dollars ($1-2 per bag). Sometimes they will hand your bags off at the curb to another helper. If this happens, split the tip between them.

We honor and respect everyone’s decision as to how they would like to get to Villa Sumaya. Some guests prefer to make their own arrangements. This is fine for the experienced world traveler but does not allow us to track you as you travel through the highlands and by boat to us. If you have never traveled in a developing country, please let us organize your ground transportation. We do not recommend taking public buses unless you are familiar with this type of travel. In either case, please inform us of your plans and approximate time of arrival. If you are part of a group retreat, please give your flight and travel information to your group leader and they will pass it on to us.

If you have a prearranged, private shuttle, your driver will be outside the airport waiting. He will be holding a “Villa Sumaya” sign (see your email confirmation for more details). If you are traveling with a group, you can safely wait for other guests in the van. If your flight arrives 3:00pm or later, we suggest that you stay in Antigua or Guatemala City for the night. (See our hotel suggestions on the last page of this kit.) Typically, whatever hotel you choose will make airport transport arrangements for you. If they do not provide this service, we are happy to.

Antigua is a quaint, colonial city about 45-60 minutes from the airport. Whether in Antigua or Guatemala City, be sure to ask about safety in the neighborhood. We do not suggest walking around either city at night. Ask for a reliable taxi service if you plan to be out late.

Whether you are taking a private or public shuttle, please be sure to be waiting in front of your hotel or designated location on time. You may want a snack and water for the ride. It is about a 3 hour drive, but with traffic or construction it could be longer. Approximately an hour into the ride, the roads get curvy and mountainous. If you tend to get carsick, be sure to bring a remedy that will help you.

Arriving in Panajachel

Once you arrive in Panajachel, your shuttle driver will drop you off at the dock area. You’ll then be taking a 15-minute boat ride to our dock.

We highly recommend taking a private boat and will arrange one for you upon request. Your shuttle driver will call ahead so that your boat will be waiting. For 1 to 4 people, the cost is $25 and for 5+ the price is $6 per person. Private boats arranged through Villa Sumaya can be added to your personal bill. There is an additional $15 surcharge for private boats departing between 7pm-6am.

Public boat transportation from Tzanjuyu (“san-who-you”) dock is available roughly every half hour from 7:00am to 7:30pm. The price is about Q20 per person ($3.00), and you will need to pay the driver in local currency upon exiting.

Ask in advance to be dropped off at the Villa Sumaya dock. This is very important as it is a 20-minute walk from the main Santa Cruz dock (with luggage this would be very difficult).

Arriving at Sumaya

Although Guatemala is a quick flight from the USA, it is a different world. Although Spanish is the official language, Mayan dialects are spoken by the majority of indigenous people. Our managers speak English and Spanish and are happy to do translations for housekeeping and kitchen staff.

In Guatemala, things are conducted at a more relaxed pace, and we enjoy life by slowing down. This heart-centered perspective is a relief for guests coming to relax and unwind. Be patient, as things often take more time to resolve here than you may be accustomed to. Feel free to ask again if something you requested did not get done. For any maintenance issues, please make a note on our “Maintenance Log” clipboard hanging by the office in the courtyard. A smile and a sense of humor go a long way towards accomplishing your goals. Our English-speaking staff will be close by to help.

Please note – if your stay coincides with a group retreat, buffet meals will be served at designated times, typically 8:30am, 1:00pm and 6:30pm. Breakfast is $10, Lunch $12 and Dinner $20. Snacks and smoothies can be ordered between meals. At other times of the year, guests can order off the menu.

For transportation, here are the rates:   We can arrange your private arrival shuttle and boat upon request. For a quick reference, private shuttle prices are outlined in the table below:

Guatemala City to Panajachel Antigua to Panajachel
1-2 people $120 1-2 people $100
3 people $45 each 3 people $35 each
4 people $35 each 4 people $30 each
5+ people $30 each 5+ people $20 each

The private boat service is $25 for 1-4 people, $6 per person if there are at least 5 passengers.

Paying your Bill at Villa Sumaya

We accept US dollars ($50 or $100 bills in excellent condition only, please), Guatemalan Quetzals, US personal checks, PayPal and Visa and Mastercard credit cards. There is a 5% fee on credit cards. There are ATMs in Panajachel and other large towns on the lake. Some guests bring a few hundred dollars for incidentals.

Cancellation Policies

Room reservations cancelled at least 45 days prior to the reservation date will be eligible to recuperate 50% of their deposit. For reservations cancelled after that time period, there will be no refund.

Personal retreats or package reservations cancelled at least 45 days prior to the reservation will be eligible to receive 50% of their deposit. Cancellations within 45 days of the reservation will not be reimbursed.

Group retreat participants, please check with your group leader about their cancellation policies.

Group Leaders – we will use your Villa Sumaya contract as a guideline for cancellations.

Staff Gratuities

We recommend leaving a tip of between $7-10 per day. This dana (offering) goes to the entire staff; from the gardeners (who also carry your bags) to kitchen staff and housekeeping to the local managers. There is no need for additional tipping to our staff. Please tip massage therapists and tour guides separately.

Changing Dollars to Quetzals

If you have a chance to exchange money in a U.S. airport, we recommend getting $100 to start off. In the Guatemala City Airport, there is an exchange desk. Once you are near our center, there are banks and ATMs in Panajachel where you can change dollars ($50 or $100 bills in excellent condition only). At Villa Sumaya, we are unable to change large amounts of money.

When I first arrived at NCCR, I didn’t believe it was possible to live a life free from anxiety, a life connected to hope. I was completely disconnected from my dreams, my body, and my own inner power. Kim brought me back into alignment with my physical body, providing me with an awareness I sorely needed and now apply daily. I recommend working with Kim without hesitation. Your future YOU will thank you for it! OK, now I’m fully crying!!! I LOVE YOU, KIM!

~Mara T.

It was hard for me to trust, which made it challenging to connect with others. That’s when I started working with Kim at NCCR. Her firm but compassionate approach helped me learn to trust, not just her, but my ability to evaluate my relationships with others, as well as to value my needs. Kim’s support was invaluable when crisis jeopardized my well-being. Most recently, I was a participant on a women’s retreat hosted by Kim. Getting away from the stresses of everyday life to enjoy some revitalizing time helped me clarify my goals for the future, and create a supportive network of other women.

~Emily D.

Nancy is a very kind, caring, and intentional therapist who puts me at ease time and again and always helps me feel heard. She empathizes, validates, and gently suggests changes. She’s ready to laugh or get serious. She’s always willing to try new things, to change course at any moment, or to keep with something important, despite frustrations and tough moments. When I feel like I need to move, we move! I never feel stuck in one place, literally or figuratively. I feel so lucky to have her walking beside me at this time in my life!

Please tell me more about the retreat!
